Scheduling an appointment with a pelvic floor therapist can feel a bit daunting, especially when dealing with personal concerns like bladder leakage or urgency, bowel leakage or urgency, painful intercourse, or prolapse symptoms.
Many people don’t know what to expect during their initial evaluation so here is an idea of how an evaluation at Pelvic Balance Physical Therapy is conducted.
Prior to the first appointment, you will receive an intake form via email. This will ask about your past medical history, current concerns, previous treatments, goal for therapy, and consent for treatment.
The first part of the evaluation allows for you to share your story and reason for seeking care. It is your body and your story after all, and no one should be making assumptions based on paperwork alone! After screening the functions in these areas, an external assessment is performed. This is always tailored to each patient but may include assessment of spine range of motion, hip flexibility, leg and core strength, breathing mechanics, and balance.
Once the external assessment is complete, it is recommended for an internal pelvic floor examination. This is always at the discretion of the patient who is more than welcome to decline this part of the evaluation; however, it can provide important information about any contributing factors to your pelvic health concerns. A pelvic floor examination with a therapist is much different than with a medical doctor. At Pelvic Balance, we do not use stirrups, a speculum, or use those dreadful paper sheets to cover yourself.
We have a very clean and calm office environment with peaceful lighting, nature sounds in the background, table warmer, and soft fresh linen on the mat. We use our gloved hand to gently assess the vulva and vestibule tissues externally and then an internal vaginal exam is done with one digit to assess the pelvic floor muscles, connective tissue, bladder, uterus, rectum, and nerve sensitivity of the pelvic girdle.
Once this portion of the assessment is complete, we will discuss the findings from the evaluation. We will explain what was found during the evaluation and how this is contributing to your symptoms.
Please know that you don’t have to share anything or do any portion of the examination or treatment that you aren’t comfortable with. We are on your team to help you figure out why your symptoms are happening and develop a treatment plan to address your concerns. You don’t have to deal with symptoms on your own!
All appointments will be a full 60 minutes. Please allow for this time as a minimum when making your schedule as we do maximize our time with you.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and access the area being treated. Athletic attire or loose-fitting clothing is often suitable for therapy sessions.
Pelvic Balance Physical Therapy strives to provide the highest quality of health care to our clients. Unfortunately, insurance companies have continued to decrease reimbursement of physical therapy services year after year despite increased cost of living.
Pelvic health physical therapy is one-on-one so this impacts our specialty more significantly. Highly skilled pelvic health PT's are typically out-of-network due to this unfortunate medical environment with insurance.
In order to provide excellent care and keep the business properly running we are an out-of-network practice with insurance companies.
This means that our client's care is the number ONE priority which allows for significantly quicker healing time frames, better outcomes, and organized care that is efficient!
The number of therapy sessions required varies depending on the nature and severity of your condition, as well as your individual progress. We are specialists in pelvic health and have wonderful structured programs that we can confidently recommend with a specific time frame and number of sessions in mind due to our years of experience with different pelvic health conditions.
Typically the plan of care will be 8-14 weeks in length and between 5-14, 60 minute long treatment sessions. Your therapist will discuss your treatment plan and expected timeline during your initial evaluation.
We are specialists in pelvic health. If you are dealing with bladder, bowel, sexual, or postpartum body concerns we absolutely can help and have over 140, 5 star reviews to prove the results we are able to get with the women that trust us to work with them :)!
